Job Posting: A2J Author Programmer

$20.00/hour (Approximately 500 hours)

April (part-time), May to July (full-time), and August (part-time) Based out of Toronto, Richmond Hill or Orillia, as preferred, but also open to applicants seeking flex-hours and/or work-from-home arrangements is seeking a self-starting and enthusiastic individual to complete a 4 month plus internship programming animated online interviews that increase access to justice. You will program interviews in an easy-to-use software called A2J Author. Reporting the Project Manager and senior A2J Programmer, you will program interactive interviews in A2J Author and associated output style sheets. Prior programming experience is an asset, but not required. Following the conclusion of the internship, part-time work will be available on a piecemeal basis. This position can be carried out remotely and/or on a flex-hours basis.

THE PROJECT: create animated interviews that help people fill out forms is a project partnership of community legal clinics. The project is building interactive websites that help caseworkers, clients and non-legal service providers to fill out legal forms using guided interactive interviews. The interviews are designed to expand the reach of live community legal clinic services. Each interview is customized to the local needs of the community legal clinic that uses it. Interview programming is done in A2J Author, software designed for use by non-programmers.

THE CHALLENGE: your role

  • Learn how to use the functions and features of the A2J Author software
  • Use XSL (XSLT,XSL-FO) to manipulate and convert raw xml data output from A2J interviews into associated PDF documents
  • Working alone, program animated interviews in A2J Author and associated XSL style sheets using plain language instructions posted to a private XWiki wiki
  • Work with the project’s web developers and senior A2J Programmer to upload and integrate the completed interviews to participating community legal clinic websites
  • Occasionally attend project meetings at offices in downtown Toronto and Richmond Hill


  • Aptitude for learning and working with new software applications
  • High attention to detail
  • Visited the website (before applying for this opportunity) in order to develop a basic understanding of the role and purpose of A2J Author software
  • Prior experience working independently
